Merle Miller Interview with Harry S. Truman, Tape 6, Side A

Conversation among Harry S. Truman, Merle Miller, David Noyes, and William Hillman, Tape 6, Side A. These tapes were the basis of the book "Plain Speaking." See finding aid for Merle Miller tapes for detailed information and description. This recording deals with such former President Truman answering questions about the Korean War from military officers at Fort Leavenworth. He discusses the role of the United Nations in the Korean War, possible use of atomic weapons, the origins of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), and potential intervention in China. Two parts.

Lauchlin Currie, former aide to late President Franklin D. Roosevelt, testifying before the House Un-American Activities Committee, denounced as lies the charges that he fed U. S. secrets to a wartime Soviet espionage network. He said the charges of his accuser, Miss Elizabeth Bentley, were based upon "hearsay three times removed." From: Beth Gore.

Accused Spy Judith Coplon

Judith Coplon is shown in this photo. Miss Coplon had pleaded innocent to a charge of espionage. The 27 year old former Justice Department analyst was arraigned before Federal Judge Richmond Keech who fixed bail at $100,000 and set April 25, 1949 as the date for her trial.
