President Truman Signing Public Housing Bill

President Truman in the oval office signed into law the controversial Public Housing and Slum-Clearance Bill--the first of his so-called "Fair Deal" measures to be approved by Congress. Looking on as the Chief Executive affixed his signature, left to right: Senator Burnet R. Maybank (with his head turned) (D.S.C.); Senator Ralph E. Flanders (R. Vt.); Senator John J. Sparkman (D. Rycom PIO (Ryukyus Command Public Information Office), Ceremony for New Housing Project in Okinawa

At a ceremony March 26th, Major General Robert S. Beightler, Commanding General, Ryukyus Command and Deputy Governor with Colonel Thomas Lane, Okinawa District Engineer Major E. G. Georgia, DE, Mr. Harry Kim, one of the supervisors of the new project, Mr. M. Notomi, President of the Notomi-Kensetsu Company which will handle the grading and utility installation for the area, and a foreman of the workers on the new housing project Sukiran where 195 dependents dwellings will be built.

National Housing Expeditor Wilson W. Wyatt, seated, today signed the first premium payment plan designed to achieve expanded production of scarce building materials. The plan, placed into effect as of June 1, 1946, covers the structural clay (brick) industry and was worked out in cooperation with the representatives of that industry. Use of premium payments was authorized by the Veterans Emergency Housing Act of 1946. Standing is Phillip H. Coombs, National Housing Act Director of Materials Supply Branch and Chairman of the Interagency Steering Committee on premium payments.

President Eric Johnston of the U. S. Chamber of Commerce, urging Congress to make sure that the bulk of the government's housing activities are returned to their pre-war status under the Federal Loan Agency at the end of the war.
