Two Communist mine-laying sampans are intercepted by USS Manchester crew members near Wonsan Harbor, Korea. Original caption: The Commies hatch a new plan to terminate the siege of Wonsan. At 0235 on 23 May 1951 a number of mine-laying sampans attempt to mine us in on a dark, foggy night. Our radar controlled guns disrupt the enemy plans.

Communist forces loaded sampan boats with explosives to act as mines to end siege of Wonsan Harbor, Korea by United States and United Nations naval ships. The sampans were intercepted by radar and crew were killed. The sampans were brought the USS Manchester.

During personnel evacuations on a beach in Korea, enemy shell bursts are visible. The USS Manchester aided in the evacuation of stranded Thailand sailors from the HMTS Prasae that ran aground during a blizzard.
