General Alexander A. Vandegrift, the fighting Marine Commandant, appearing before a Senate Committee today, strongly opposed the merger of the Army and the Navy into a single department. From: Beth Gore.

General A. A. Vandegrift, head of the U.S. Marines, told a surprised Senate committee today that proposed unification of the Armed Services would reduce the Marine Corps to "military impotence" and strip it of "everything but name."
