Presidential residences

Part of the large kitchen garden at Mount Vernon, Virginia. This the home of George Washington, the first President of the United States. The fig bushes along the North wall were planted by Washington.

The Blair House, located adjacent from the White House, is the official guest house of the United States. It was the former home of the Blair family who occupied it for over one hundred years. It was purchased by the Blair family in 1836 from the Lovell estate. Doctor Lovell was the first Surgeon General of the Army. The Blair House was the temporary home of President Truman while the White House was undergoing repairs.

Truman (left) is shaking hands with the first President of the Republic of Korea (South Korea) Syngman Rhee.  Bess Truman and Francesca Donner Rhee can be seen standing beside their husbands. They are on the front porch of the Truman home in Independence, Missouri. Others in the photograph are unidentified.
