Communist forces loaded sampan boats with explosives to act as mines to end the siege of Wonsan Harbor, Korea by United States and United Nations naval ships. The sampans were intercepted by radar and crew were killed. The sampans were brought the USS Manchester. The man in the stern was unconscious but still alive and receiving help from crew members of the USS Manchester.
