The USS Manchester refuels next to the USS Ashtabula, a fleet oiler as mail is also passed to the USS Manchester. The Manchester was a part of the Task Force 77 during the Korean War.

Original caption: Hot shell casings start a fire on their own as the USS Manchester big guns wage a duel with enemy shore batteries on the Kalma Gak peninsula in Korea. For almost an hour the Manchester kept up with a rapid continuous counter-battery fire as enemy shells exploded near the ship. As the hot shell casings piled up they ignited the cork used as spacers between the powder charge and projectile. They can be seen on the main deck. The fire was quickly brought under control by alert damage control personnel.
