Before the war this place was heavily wooded. Very few tree stumps can be recognized in the picture. Quite a few bodies were still unburied when we took these shots. Near this place I happened to need a shoe string and saw a shoe near a shell hole so I made a grab for the shoe but turned it loose as it still had a foot in it. Location is in France. Part of the protecting system of forts surrounding Verdun. It was in this territory that the Crown Prince of Germany made his big drive to take Paris. This territory was taken and retaken four times.
