Battle Front Area in France Where Boot was Found with Foot Still Inside

Before the war this place was heavily wooded. Very few tree stumps can be recognized in the picture. Quite a few bodies were still unburied when we took these shots. Near this place I happened to need a shoe string and saw a shoe near a shell hole so I made a grab for the shoe but turned it loose as it still had a foot in it. Location is in France. From an album of Lorain H. Cunningham, who served in the 129th Field Artillery during World War I and was a friend of Harry S. Truman.

Part of the Protecting System of Forts Surrounding Verdun

Part of the protecting system of forts surrounding Verdun. It was in this territory that the Crown Prince of Germany made his big drive to take Paris. This territory was taken and retaken four times. The great amount of shell fire that practically turned up every foot of ground can be seen from the many holes in the picture. From an album of Lorain H. Cunningham, who served in the 129th Field Artillery during World War I and was a friend of Harry S. Truman.
