OPA Administrator Chester Bowles speaking with reporters
Office of Price Administration Administrator Chester Bowles returned from his southern winter vacation today for a White House conference with President Truman and Reconversion Director John Snyder. Mr. Bowles, shown here talking with reporters, declined to comment on what had taken place. He would not admit that steel had been discussed, did not know when his report on steel prices would be handed to President Truman, said that his continuing as OPA Administrator had not been a subject of conversation, and replied "no comment" to all other questions asked by reporters. Chester Bowles, newly designated head of the Office of Economic Stabilization, warned Congress that the nation's economic system would be smashed "beyond hope of repair unless it extends price controls to keep the lid on the present inflationary dynamite." He urged the House Banking Committee to approve speedily a pending bill to continue the controls a year after the present June 30 expiration date. From: Beth Gore.
