President Truman Reads to the Press Announcement of the Japanese Surrender

President Harry S. Truman in the Oval Office, reading to the assembled members of the press his announcement of the Japanese surrender, officially signaling the war's end. OPA Administrator Chester Bowles speaking with reporters

Office of Price Administration Administrator Chester Bowles returned from his southern winter vacation today for a White House conference with President Truman and Reconversion Director John Snyder. Mr. Bowles, shown here talking with reporters, declined to comment on what had taken place. He would not admit that steel had been discussed, did not know when his report on steel prices would be handed to President Truman, said that his continuing as OPA Administrator had not been a subject of conversation, and replied "no comment" to all other questions asked by reporters.
