President Truman's Address in New York City Before the United Nations Assembly

President Harry S. Truman's address in New York City before the United Nations Assembly at Flushing Meadows. The President spoke at 11:30 a.m. In his opening remarks he referred to Nasrollah Entezam, President of the General Assembly, and Trygve Lie, Secretary General of the United Nations. The address was carried on a nationwide radio broadcast. Secretary Lie introduced the president.

The President spoke at 12:30 p.m. from a stand erected on 42nd Street, the southern boundary of the permanent headquarters of the United Nations, between Franklin D. Roosevelt Drive and First Avenue, New York City. The President's opening words referred to Brig. Gen. Carlos P. Romulo, President of the General Assembly; Trygve Lie, Secretary General of the United Nations; Thomas E. Dewey, Governor of New York; and William O'Dwyer, Mayor of New York City.

Truman signs U.N. Loan Bill

Portrait of Trygve Lie, was elected Secretary-General of the United Nations on February 1, 1946. He was born in Calo, Norway on July 16, 1896, and holds a degree from the Oslo University Law School. He has served as Minister of Justice and of Commerce for his Government, as well as Minister of Foreign Affairs, and represented Norway at the First Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
