Portrait of George Washington
This portrait of George Washington at Princeton, painted by Charles Peale Polk, is in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
This photograph of a portrait was originally identified on the verso as Ralph Waldo Emerson by artist Thomas Sully. The photograph was furnished to Mr. Truman from the National Gallery of Art, "custodian for a future National Portrait Gallery." Now the portrait is owned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and is identified simply as "Portrait of a Man" by an unnamed American artist.
