COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

The papers of Henry G. Bennett mostly relate to his career as the President of Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College and as the Administrator of the Technical Cooperation Administration. The collection consists of one series, a Subject File, arranged alphabetically by folder title.

The series consists of correspondence, handwritten notes, financial records, memorandums, newspaper clippings, photographs, printed materials and speeches pertaining to Bennett’s career as President of Oklahoma A & M College (later renamed Oklahoma State University) from 1928-1951 and as Administrator of the Technical Cooperation Administration until his death in 1951 while on a trip to Iran. The material related to the death of Bennett was apparently added to the collection by Bennett’s children.

Also included are background materials, correspondence, reports, newspaper clippings, travel permits, itineraries, tickets, receipts, and diary entries related to Bennett’s trips to Europe, Asia and South America from 1949-1951. The trips were designed to promote agricultural education as part of the Technical Cooperation Administration, which was commonly referred to as the Point Four program. The collection contains photos of Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia and materials related to the Oklahoma State Symphony and the Regional Council for Education. Also included are letters and other materials related to Bennett’s children from 1951 to 1971.

Related collections include the papers of Benjamin Hardy, the Chief Public Affairs Officer of the Technical Cooperation Administration, who died in the plane crash with Bennett; the papers of Stanley Andrews, Bennett’s successor as TCA Administrator; and the Student Research File, “The Point Four Program: Reaching Out to Help the Less Developed Countries.”
