CABINET MEETING, MARCH 5TH, 1948

4:00 PM

THE PRESIDENT

Greeted Cabinet members after return from vacation at Key West.

Said we have very bad situation in connection with the movements of Russia in Czechoslovakia, Finland, Rumania. Asked Cabinet to think about our problems and will further discuss at luncheon Monday.

SCHWELLENBACH

Complained of the lack of affirmative action by Democrats in the House.

ANDERSON

Agreed that the Democrats are sitting by on the theory that they will let the Republicans make the mistakes. Thinks it is most unwise. Thinks that Rayburn and others should be invited to the White House.

SNYDER

Agreed with Anderson.

HARRIMAN

Has refused to make Loyalty files on Dr. Condon available to the Congressional Un-American Activities Committee.

THE PRESIDENT

Asked Atty Gen to prepare a memo to all departments covering release of personnel files to Congressional committees.

HARRIMAN

The steel price increase is a stupid piece of public relations. Steel prices are more in line than almost any other commodity. Proved this contention by introducing statistical charts - including savings, wages and prices.

ATTY GEN

Justice Dept has not yet been able to show that the steel industry entered into price fixing agreement. Carnegie-Illinois was the leader and others followed.

FORRESTAL

Suggested naming of Cabinet Committee to look into export problems - particularly shipments to Russian satellites.

THE PRESIDENT

Steelman was instructed to set it up.
