CABINET MEETING, FRIDAY, AUGUST 26, 1949

10:00 am

McGrath's 1st Cabinet meeting
Krug absent

THE PRESIDENT

Asked Acheson to lead off.

ACHESON

Will go ahead on Palestine loan - but we are going to warn Jews that we must get more cooperation from them in effecting peace in the Middle East. X-M Bank crossed the signals and gave Jews impression that State was blocking loan which is not true.

SNYDER

Domestic fiscal situation of govt for coming year is in good shape.

PMB

Ordinarily July is low month in Post Office revenue. 6½% increase over last year has been noted this year in July. This indicates that business is using mails to go after new business. It is a good barometer that business is getting more active.

CHAPMAN

Senate has restored cuts - and has given highest amount to Interior in history. It is the finest and cleanest appropriations bill in the history of Interior. The bill will allow us to carry out the President’s campaign promises in the West.

THE PRESIDENT

Told Brannan he wanted to arrange conference with Lucas & Anderson on farm program.

SAWYER

Complained of operations of Civil Svc Commission. Has furnished Steelman with interim report on Fact Finding Survey on Unemployment - plans next study on West Coast.

MCGRATH

The Congressional Committee has not invited Justice to testify on Tidelands Bill. The dept should be called and will violently oppose the present bill.

CHAPMAN

Krug will testify against the bill on next Monday.

BARKLEY

Senate passed 2 bills yesterday and one conference report. May get the stockpiling bill through today. Going back to Minimum Wage and then Reciprocal Trade Bill.
