THE PRESIDENT
Steelman and John Carroll have been working with Wilson and Eric Johnston on Control Bill strategy. Suggested Wilson write a strong letter to Speaker and go to people via radio & TV. Told Cabinet to support Bill with full vigor.
JOHN CARROLL
As of today we stand to lose controls. If wage stabilization is sunk Labor will join farmers in sabotaging our whole economic program and we will have strike and spiral of inflation.
MARSHALL
Thinks main pressure should be put on housewives of the country to write or wire Congressmen.
ACHESON
Korean Armistice meeting is going to take place tomorrow. Thinks we should maintain attitude of skepticism. In Iran the situation is worse. Iran turned down World Court proposal for temporary operation of oil fields yesterday. There has been a revolution and counter-revolution in Thailand. The govt is now back on the track.
SNYDER
Is hopeful that we will get a tax bill.
MARSHALL
We now have one division in Europe under NATO program. An Armored Division is now embarking and 2 more National Guard Divisions are being readied for European duty.
BRANNAN
Since January there have been 164 investigations by outside units of the Dept. of Agriculture. There has been no serious disclosure by these investigations.
WILSON
We are going to have to spend 50 billion dollars a year for next few years if Congress and the people back our proposed mobilization program. We must sell Congress and people that we must go forward regardless of developments in Korea. We cannot afford to let down.
MARSHALL
We should exploit the fact that the real trap ahead of us is the LET DOWN.
