COMMANDER --
Briefed Cabinet on Korea.
ACHESON
Just returned from meeting in Lisbon of NATO organization in which Snyder, Lovett and Harriman participated. TA was a successful meeting with French, British, Germans and others.
(1) Total German contribution to defense.
(2) Agreement on what weapons would not be permitted to be produced in Germany.
The question was taken up as to what forces would be provided by NATO governments. This was resolved in a very successful manner.
On weapons not to be made by Germany these included atomic weapons, chemicals for warfare, naval vessels and other major weapons. There was much discussion and argument from Germans but this was also successfully worked out.
SNYDER
In a short period of time many diverse and complicated problems were faced and the results have been a great success.
LOVETT
The Secty of State did a great job as the Chief of Mission of U. S. delegation and to the delegation as a whole. The amazing thing was that U. S. is not left holding the bag and that the NATO countries are providing a more equitable share for airfield construction which is vital.
HARRIMAN
The agreement in principle on the merging of French and German forces is an historic development in view of traditional enmity between the two.
CHAPMEN
We lost the Alaska Statehood Bill in the Senates by one vote. We may be able to get a vote switched and obtain re-consideration.
