Rangers with Lyle Watts, center with hand on hip, examine lysimeters in San Dimas Experimental Forest, California. A lysimeter measures the amount of water lost to evapotranspiration in a certain area of soil. Evapotranspiration amounts are the sum of the amounts of water lost through evaporation and transpiration of the plants.
