It starts in Ashiya, Japan, with Karp writing a letter home to his mother and father, and the film is like an attempt to demonstrate the contents of the letter. It shows his life, smoking, drinking, packing for a trip, movies, a Jeep, leaves, fishermen, visiting a beach and going swimming.
