Description

Japanese General Yoshijiro Umezu signs the Instrument of Surrender Agreement on behalf of the Japanese government ending the war with Japan while (left to right) General Douglas MacArthur and his Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Richard Sutherland look on. Others in the background are unidentified. The ceremony took place aboard the USS Missouri in Manila Bay. These photographs were given to Colonel Westray B. Boyce during her tour of the Pacific Theatre in the Fall of 1945.
