Description

Home movies shot by 1st Lt. Raymond Moser, 3rd Bomb Wing. The notation on the can reads, "Ray. Flight to Japan from U.S. On Base at Pusan, Korea, R&R's in Japan. A Squadron off to Battle, etc." Raymond Moser originally donated the film to the Center of the Study of the Korean War, who originally assigned this film the number MM.461. When the CSKW closed, the Truman Library received its collection, including this film.

00:00 - Aerial views taken while flying in an airplane, showing the cockpit, scenery, and other planes in the air. Landing on an island airstrip. Quick shot of a man swimming in the ocean. More scenes from up in the air.

2:46 - Landing on another island runway, presumably Naval Station Kwajalein (sign on MATS Passenger Terminal). Views of base and palm trees blowing. More aerial views, then landing at a more substantial air base.

3:21 - Scenes from land, green scenery. Men climbing palm trees and eating coconuts. More aerial views. 

4:32 - A busy Korean city street scene. Views of countryside taken from moving train or car. 

5:35 - Sign for Kunsan Air Base in Korea (K-8), home of the 3rd Bombardment Wing. Signs on base for "Ye Olde Base Billtting (sic) Office Always Open Vacancies." Sign for Headquarters 3rd Bomb Wing (L) and the 8th Bombardment Squadron (L). Several views of the base and flags. Brief view of two Korean women. 

6:25 - Scenes from R&R travels in Japan. View of temple shrine complex in Japan with crowds and a lush garden landscape, also a marketplace and Torii gate. Group of Japanese children drawing and painting. Monks and warriors in ceremonial dress, practitioners demonstrating Kyūdō (archery with long bows). Street scenes, a procession. Soldiers riding horses near a Torii gate. Nara park buildings, children gathered near sika deer, incense cauldron, ringing the large temple bell.

14:10 - Views of 8th Bomb Squadron base, planes and bombs on tarmac, airplane maintenance, cleaning, painting, and loading bombs onto wings. Personnel working out coordinates, checking equipment, loading a plane called "Moonshine." Planes lined up to take off. Views from the air of pilot and other planes, including dropping bombs. Landing back at the base and emerging from the plane. Marking a yellow cap to count sorties, one soldier has 50.

19:17 - Fuji-Hakone National Park in Japan. Scenic views including Mt. Fuji. Japanese fisherman, children gathered on beach. Waterfalls and rapids. A cabin retreat.

21:24 - Back on military base, a soldier plays ukulele. Groups of soldiers play volleyball, football, and horseshoes. Hot dogs cooked on an outdoor grill. An integrated color guard lowers the flags.

22:57 - A city street scene: traffic, street cars, bicycles. An equestrian monument. Temple buildings, statues.

24:26 - View from a flying airplane.
