The first in a series of four ¾” videotapes produced by the John F. Kennedy Library of a conference held there on 4/12/84: THE TRUMAN PRESIDENCY. Introduces the Truman Centennial Conference. Video quality poor. John Stewart, Director of Education at the Kennedy Library opening comments. Sheldon Stern with the Kennedy Library introduces an 8 minute segment of President Truman’s acceptance speech at the 1948 Democratic Convention (quality very poor, audio not understandable). Comments by Kennedy Library Director Dan Finn. Keynote Speaker is Clark Clifford, Special Counsel to President Truman. Discusses forming a new Cabinet and White House staff, Potsdam Conference, beginning of the Cold War, Truman Doctrine, NATO, Marshall Plan, Point Four Program and Berlin Airlift. Questions to Mr. Clifford not audible, but responses are. This is followed by the assembling of a panel for discussion. Audio spotty. Dr. Ben Zobrist (Truman Library Director) introduces each panel member. Clayton Fritchey, assistant to General George C. Marshall and then assistant to President Truman. He discusses the first day of the Truman Presidency and other matters. Tape ends during his speaking.

Tape 2 of the series opens with Mr. Clayton Fritchey continuing to speak. Audio spotty, video dim. Ken Hechler, Special Assistant to President Truman 1947-1952. Discusses his experiences with President Truman. Elmer Staats, Director of the Budget 1950-1953. Discusses President Truman’s interest in the budget and improving government. Audio is improved, video remains dim. David Stowe, discusses President Truman’s participation in John F. Kennedy’s presidential campaign. Roger Tubby, Press Secretary to President Truman. Discusses his experiences with President Truman and the firing of General Douglas MacArthur. Tape ends with this speaker’s presentation.

Tape 3 of the series opens with panel answering questions pertaining to their presentations. Panel present: Ken Hechler, Elmer Staats, David Stowe, Roger Tubby, and Dr. Ben Zobrist. This segment 19:26 minutes. Second portion of tape introduces a new panel whose topic is “The Evaluation of the Truman Presidency.” Moderator is C. Petillo. Cynthia Harrison speaks on Women’s Issues; David McCullough speaks on the history of the man – Harry S. Truman; H. Stikoff discusses the civil rights actions taken during the presidency from a revisionist viewpoint. The tape ends during Mr. Stikoff’s closing remarks.

The fourth in a series of four ¾” videotapes produced by the John F. Kennedy Library of a conference held there on 4/12/84: THE TRUMAN PRESIDENCY. The last tape opens with journalist R. Strout discussing the role of the media during the Truman years, and particularly the whistle stop campaign. Questions are then taken by the panel: C. Harrison, David McCullough, H. Stikoff, and R. Strout. The tape ends with 1981 Truman Scholar recipient Sarah George commenting about the Truman Scholars Program and the application process.

Frank Pace, Director of Bureau of the Budget and Secretary of the Army under President Truman. Discussion of his leadership and the loyalty and respect of his staff. Clark Clifford, joined President Truman’s staff in 1946 and later became Special Counsel to the President. Discussion of the establishment of the State of Israel. VHS Tape
