COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

The papers of Mark W. Clark are composed mostly of correspondence between Clark and President Harry S. Truman during the period from 1945 to 1952. Clark wrote to Truman on various occasions, congratulating him on his 1948 re-election victory and wishing him well on his birthdays. There are also letters from Truman to Clark congratulating him on the Allied victory in Italy and informing the general that he had been named the United States High Commissioner on the Allied Council for Austria.

The papers also include a letter from Truman to General Dwight D. Eisenhower, which discusses the need to provide housing for displaced persons after World War II. Also in the collection is a memorandum by Clark discussing Truman’s trip to California in June 1948. While visiting Italy in 1956, former President Truman criticized certain aspects of the U.S. military campaign in that country during World War II. Clark, who had commanded the 5th Army in Italy during the war, was asked by the press for his reaction to Truman’s comments. The papers include an inquiry from the press and Clark’s statement on that occasion.

Clark’s papers at the Truman Library are copied from original documents that are part of a much larger collection of his papers at Daniel Library, The Citadel, Charleston, South Carolina. Further information concerning General Clark can be found at the Truman Library in the papers of Harry S. Truman (Official File 483, President’s Personal File 2022, and Post-Presidential Papers: Name File).
